We all have a spark of goodness in us, a powerful potential for developing warmth, openness, tenderness, sanity, and an incomparable sense of well-being and richness that cannot be approached by material or physical wealth and comfort.

- Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche.

The Hay River Karma Kagyu Study Group was organized in 1997 as an affiliate center of KTD. Our purpose is to make available to all who are interested the teachings and practices of the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. We are, in particular, a retreat center for the Nyungne practice of Thousand-Armed Chenrezig. Our main teachers are The Seventeenth Karmapa, Ögyen Trinley Dorje and Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche. We are located in rural west central Wisconsin just outside of Ridgeland.

Monthly White Tara Practice
First Sunday of each month:
We chant White Tara here on a monthly basis for His Holiness the Karmapa, and Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche. It is a practice done to prolong life and increase vitality and health. In the past, we have done Medicine Buddha here, which is excellent for people who are sick. The White Tara is a little more inclusive in terms of the benefits. Both of these sadhanas can be done as an individual practice if you would like, as long as you have the empowerment, reading transmission, and instructions.

Weekly Practice Schedule
Sundays
10:00 a.m.
On the first Sunday of the month we practice White Tara.

10:00 a.m.
The rest of the month our weekly practice alternates between shamatha meditation and Chenrezig practice. Please call for more information.

The Columbus KTC offers a regular weekly schedule of meditation practice and classes open to the general public. Meditation instruction is available to everyone. Throughout the year, KTC hosts lamas and monks who give teachings and instructions on practice, and who offer the refuge ceremony for those who wish to practice formally as Buddhists.

For formal practitioners, the center also provides a schedule for special practices each week. The center features a large meditation room for group practice, and a traditional Tibetan Buddhist shrine. Books, incense, and other practice materials may also be obtained at the center.

The center is host to resident teacher Lama Kathy Wesley, a long-time student of KTC founder, Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche. Lama Kathy was a member of the first group of Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche's students to complete a traditional three-year retreat at KTD's upstate New York retreat center, Karme Ling.

Hartford Karma Thegsum Choling is located in the West End of Hartford on the corner of Whitney and Elizabeth Streets, across from Elizabeth Park.

Regularly scheduled Meetings, Practices and Instruction
Our regularly scheduled programs are offered free of charge and all are welcome.
Every Tuesday

7:00 p.m.
Meditation and Dharma Discussion

All are welcome to join for 30 minutes of shinay, or calm abiding meditation (in silence), followed by study and discussion of Buddhist meditation, practice and philosophy -- either in a discussion group or our Introduction to Buddhism classes. The discussion group reads aloud from a book by teachers trained and practicing within the Karma Kagyu lineage. There is a facilitator each week who introduces the book and helps facilitate discussion.

Our current cycle of the study and discussion focuses on the 37 Practices of a Bodhisattva by Ngulchu Thogme. We are alternating reading and discussion of H.H. Karmapa's book "Traveling the Path of Compassion" with the viewing of a DVD of teachings given by Lama Kathy Wesley on the same subject (recorded during her visit to HKTC in early 2010). In his book, the Karmapa divides the 37 verses into 17 chapters addressing such topics as renunciation, taming the mind, compassion and emptiness. As one reviewer said, "While there are many English translations and commentaries of Ngulchu Thogme's text, the Karmapa's commentary deserves attention for the elegance of his explanations. It's the work of a teacher whose impact will likely be felt for decades to come." Copies of the book are available for sale (at a discount) at HKTC.

Introduction to Buddhism
Newcomers welcome. Free meditation instruction and intro classes are available each week. Meditation instruction is offered at 7 p.m. in our classroom followed by the Introduction to Buddhism course at 7:30 p.m. Each week, a different topic is taught by one of our meditation instructors. Plenty of time is allowed for questions and discussion. The order of the classes in the month is as follows: 1st Tuesday, The Three Jewels; 2nd Tuesday, The Life of the Buddha; 3rd Tuesday, The Three Yanas; 4th Tuesday, Tibetan Buddhism and the Kagyu Lineage. If there is a 5th Tuesday it is used for open questions and answers. The four classes repeat each month and anyone is free to attend them in any sequence and more than once if they wish. Although not required, it is helpful to call ahead if you would like to attend the intro programs (860-232-8366).

Retreat Cabins
KTTG has been proud to offer solitary retreats since 1995. Three retreat cabins, located near the Tashi Gomang Stupa, are in full operation all year around. Nestled into the foothills and a short walk to the Stupa, the retreat cabins are built on the sacred land chosen by the Sixteenth Karmapa, where they enjoy a sense of isolation with inspiring views of the San Luis Valley, as well as of the Sangre de Cristo mountains. The retreat cabins are fully equipped to accommodate retreatants for short or long solitary retreats.

The Santa Cruz KTC was established by the Sixteenth Karmapa, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje in 1976 for the listening, contemplation, and practice of Tibetan Buddhism. Besides regular meetings, our center is visited by many lamas, including Seventh Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche, Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche, and Lama Namse Rinpoche.

The KTC shrine room in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains near Soquel is on privately owned land and is used and maintained by members. The beautiful interior and peaceful surroundings make our shrine room an ideal place for teachings and practice. Senior students teach an introductory course for inquirers as needed.

Another important outreach is Dzambhala Imports in Soquel, a retailer/wholesaler of Dharma goods, books, and Himalayan crafts. For more information on this service, call 408-479-4140.
