Hartford Karma Thegsum Choling is a place where authentic teachings and practices of the Karma Kagyu lineage are available to anyone who wants to benefit from the study of Tibetan Buddhism and Buddhist meditation. Established in 1997, we are one of the family of Tibetan Buddhist meditation and study centers affiliated with Karma Triyana Dharmachakra. In addition to a weekly Tuesday evening practice and study group (see below), we host visits by several Tibetan Buddhist lamas and teachers each year.

Hartford Karma Thegsum Choling is located in the West End of Hartford on the corner of Whitney and Elizabeth Streets, across from Elizabeth Park.

Regularly scheduled Meetings, Practices and Instruction
Our regularly scheduled programs are offered free of charge and all are welcome.
Every Tuesday

7:00 p.m.
Meditation and Dharma Discussion

All are welcome to join for 30 minutes of shinay, or calm abiding meditation (in silence), followed by study and discussion of Buddhist meditation, practice and philosophy -- either in a discussion group or our Introduction to Buddhism classes. The discussion group reads aloud from a book by teachers trained and practicing within the Karma Kagyu lineage. There is a facilitator each week who introduces the book and helps facilitate discussion.

Our current cycle of the study and discussion focuses on the 37 Practices of a Bodhisattva by Ngulchu Thogme. We are alternating reading and discussion of H.H. Karmapa's book "Traveling the Path of Compassion" with the viewing of a DVD of teachings given by Lama Kathy Wesley on the same subject (recorded during her visit to HKTC in early 2010). In his book, the Karmapa divides the 37 verses into 17 chapters addressing such topics as renunciation, taming the mind, compassion and emptiness. As one reviewer said, "While there are many English translations and commentaries of Ngulchu Thogme's text, the Karmapa's commentary deserves attention for the elegance of his explanations. It's the work of a teacher whose impact will likely be felt for decades to come." Copies of the book are available for sale (at a discount) at HKTC.

Introduction to Buddhism
Newcomers welcome. Free meditation instruction and intro classes are available each week. Meditation instruction is offered at 7 p.m. in our classroom followed by the Introduction to Buddhism course at 7:30 p.m. Each week, a different topic is taught by one of our meditation instructors. Plenty of time is allowed for questions and discussion. The order of the classes in the month is as follows: 1st Tuesday, The Three Jewels; 2nd Tuesday, The Life of the Buddha; 3rd Tuesday, The Three Yanas; 4th Tuesday, Tibetan Buddhism and the Kagyu Lineage. If there is a 5th Tuesday it is used for open questions and answers. The four classes repeat each month and anyone is free to attend them in any sequence and more than once if they wish. Although not required, it is helpful to call ahead if you would like to attend the intro programs (860-232-8366).

Every Thursday
7:30 p.m. - 8:30
Chenrezik and Amitabha Practice

The traditional chanting practices of Chenrezig (bodhisattva of compassion) and Buddha Amitabha are performed in Tibetan. Everyone who has a desire to experience the development of compassion and loving kindness brought about by the practice of these fervent prayers is welcome to attend. You can participate in the chanting (the Tibetan text is transliterated into phonetic Tibetan as well as English) or simply come and sit during the practice. Refuge is not required.

Every other Sunday
10 a.m. - Noon
Green Tara Practice

Green Tara (female bodhisattva of compassion) is renowned as the wish-fulfilling deity for achieving swift enlightenment. She also acts as a strong protector against the obstacles, fears, anxieties, confusion and upheavals that exist in our every day lives and that we so strongly want to overcome and eliminate. Refuge is not required; all are welcome. Call ahead to check the schedule.
